Congratulations to students and faculty who have received awards, scholarships and other honors.

Graduate student Jake Davis

Graduate student Jake Davis earned the Student Paper Award at the IEEE/OES Thirteenth Currents, Waves, and Turbulence Measurement (CWTM) Workshop last March. The workshop brings together researchers and engineers from the global ocean community to exchange technical knowledge and explore innovations in oceanic measurement techniques. Jake’s award-winning research highlights his contributions to advancing understanding in this critical field, which plays a key role in sustainable ocean science and engineering.

Graduate student Eric Gagliano

Graduate student Eric Gagliano received the Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the 2023 Fall American Geophysical Union Meeting. His research uses satellite radar technology to observe and analyze global snowmelt runoff dynamics.

Professor Faisal Hossain

Professor Faisal Hossain received the 2024 NASA Early Adopter Award in July at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This award recognizes individuals and groups who demonstrate the use of NASA Earth Science observations to inform decision-making and policy planning. Professor Hossain’s work applies satellite data to develop user-ready solutions for water management, empowering communities worldwide and advancing societal equity through science and engineering.

Graduate student Nutvara Jantarathaneewat

Graduate student Nutvara Jantarathaneewat was awarded runner-up for Best Innovation Paper at the 2024 International Conference on Highway Engineering. Her paper, "Detecting Lateral Offset Distance on Rural Roads in Thailand by Using Point Cloud Data: A Case Study," was recognized for its innovative approach to improving road safety.

Graduate student Malcolm LeClair

Graduate student Malcolm LeClair was awarded the Herbold Data Science Fellowship, receiving $10,000 to support his research on using robotics to enhance field measurement techniques. The fellowship is awarded annually to five doctoral students focused on data science and computation.

Professor Jessica Lundquist

Professor Jessica Lundquist received three major honors in 2024 recognizing her contributions to hydrology and mentorship: the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ambassador Award, induction into the AGU College of Fellows, and the Robert E. Horton Lecturer in Hydrology award from the American Meteorological Society. These awards celebrate her groundbreaking research in snow science, her commitment to environmental stewardship and her dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists.

Professor Julian Marshall

Professor Julian Marshall was appointed the Boeing International Endowed Professorship in 2024 in recognition of his research on air pollution and environmental justice. Marshall’s work explores disparities in pollution exposure and emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration to address global environmental health challenges. This professorship will support his efforts to expand the Grand Challenges Impact Lab, which empowers students to tackle global environmental and social issues in Bengaluru, India.

Graduate student Morgan Sanger

Graduate student Morgan Sanger was awarded the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program Graduate Fellowship by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and FEMA for her research on high-resolution liquefaction modeling to improve earthquake risk assessments.

Jessica Steigerwald

Jessica Steigerwald (CEE Ph.D. ’23) received the 2024 Paul V. Roberts Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. Her dissertation advances water quality engineering through the development of biochar-polymer composites for targeted adsorption of contaminants in water treatment.

Professor Yinhai Wang

Professor Yinhai Wang, Director of PacTrans and the Civil & Environmental Engineering Thomas and Marilyn Nielsen Endowed Professor, was awarded the 2024 Engineer of the Year award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers - USA. This award recognizes distinguished professionals of Chinese heritage across the United States for their work in STEM and leadership areas. The Chinese Institute of Engineers - USA presents this award to seven engineers annually, celebrating their outstanding work and achievements.
